Presbyopia

Presbyopia – the loss of near, reading vision – is a condition that affects almost everyone in their 40 to 50’s. At birth, the natural lens is soft and flexible. As we mature, it becomes less elastic and its ability to change shape is reduced.  This reduces the eye’s ability to switch from seeing objects at a distance (for driving) to seeing objects that are near (for reading).  Reading glasses, bifocal or trifocal glasses, and/or contact lenses are commonly used to improve one’s range of vision.

In standard cataract surgery, the intraocular lens (IOL) has a fixed focusing power that is set for distant vision.  Patients who choose a presbyopia-correcting IOL can benefit from improved distance and near vision.
