Thomas N. Hwang, M.D.
Dr. Thomas N. Hwang is a board certified ophthalmologist with subspecialty fellowship training in Oculofacial Plastic Surgery and Neuro-Ophthalmology.
After graduating from Harvard College in Biomedical Engineering, Dr. Hwang received his M.D. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from University of California San Francisco (UCSF). He completed ophthalmology residency training at Stanford, followed by a two-year fellowship in Oculofacial Plastic and Orbital Surgery and Neuro-Ophthalmology at UCSF.
Dr. Hwang joined Pacific Eye Associates in 2008. In addition to comprehensive ophthalmology, he has expertise in the management of eyelid, lacrimal, and orbital problems including excess eyelid skin, eyelid malposition, ptosis, nasolacrimal duct obstruction, thyroid eye disease, and tumors. He also has interest in conditions affecting the pupil, optic nerve, chiasm, intracranial visual pathways, and eye movements including optic neuritis, cranial nerve palsies and adult strabismus, pseudotumor cerebri, stroke, tumors, and myasthenia gravis.
In addition to his clinical activity, Dr. Hwang has published numerous research papers in neuro-ophthalmology and oculofacial plastic surgery. He is involved in ophthalmology resident education at California Pacific Medical Center, UCSF, and Stanford University. He is also a clinical staff member at San Francisco Veteran’s Hospital.
Dr. Hwang belongs to multiple professional organizations including the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (NANOS). He received the awards for best paper presentation at the 2008 NANOS conference and at the prestigious Walsh Society Neuro-Ophthalmology meetings in 2007 and 2008.
