Dr. David Heiden is an ophthalmologist with subspecialty training in uveitis and ocular inflammation. He provides comprehensive eye care with a focus on inflammatory eye diseases and conditions where eye disease is related to systemic illness.

Dr. Heiden specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of uveitis and inflammatory eye diseases, including conditions associated with autoimmune disorders, collagen-vascular diseases, and systemic infections such as HIV/AIDS.

Academic

Dr. Heiden has published medical research on uveitis, infectious disease, and global ophthalmology. He previously served as Section Chief for Uveitis at California Pacific Medical Center and has participated in committees of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is frequently recognized in regional and national Best Doctors listings.

Leadership & Global Health

Dr. Heiden has spent many years working internationally to prevent blindness related to infectious disease and humanitarian crises. His work has included medical service in Africa and Asia addressing conditions such as trachoma, cataract, river blindness, vitamin A deficiency, and eye complications of HIV/AIDS. He currently serves as Medical Director of the AIDS Eye Initiative at the Seva Foundation Center for Innovation in Eye Care and collaborates with global health programs including Doctors Without Borders.

Recognition

In 2018, Dr. Heiden received the Outstanding Humanitarian Service Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology for his contributions to global eye health.

Personal

Dr. Heiden’s humanitarian fieldwork and photography documenting global health crises were featured in the book Dust to Dust: A Doctor’s View of Famine in Africa. His photographs have been exhibited nationally and are included in the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
