LASIK San Francisco

What is LASIK?

LASIK is the most popular refractive surgery available today.  First, LASIK surgery is quick and painless.  Secondly, there is little or no discomfort during or after the procedure.  You are able to see objects clearly across the room, or read a clock, just minutes after the surgery.  For both personal and professional reasons, patients choose LASIK as it allows them to more freely pursue their hobbies, sports activities or career options.  LASIK can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, with or without astigmatism.  Pacific Eye Associates offers the most advanced LASIK procedure in San Francisco.

Why Choose Pacific Eye Associates for LASIK in San Francisco?

Every patient is unique, and every eye is different.  Many people choose Dr. Danny Lin, for his thoughtfulness, thoroughness, and his experience.  But, mainly, because of this particular word: Trust.

Trust in Experience

Dr. Danny Lin has been practicing for 20+ years, graduated summa cum laude from the University of Berkeley and received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from Stanford University.  He then went to UCLA to pursue a fellowship program in cornea and external ocular disease, cataract and refractive surgery.  Since LASIK is performed on the cornea, knowledge of the cornea’s healing properties and eye complications is critical to the patient’s well being.  Knowing how to handle a complication, should one occur, can make a significant difference in the patient’s outcome.

Trust in Honesty

Dr. Lin will never push you into LASIK surgery.  This might be a surprise but not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK and other doctors may simply push you towards surgery but at this practice, we make sure LASIK is the right choice for you.  He takes the time to go over every detail, answers every question and makes you feel confident in your decision.

Trust in Care

Your sight is of the utmost importance. At Pacific Eye Associates, we do not cut corners.  We pride ourselves in delivering the best personal care and we make sure you walk out of our office confident. We are concerned about human sight more than dollar signs.

What can I Expect from my LASIK Consultation?

Upon check-in, a LASIK Counselor will welcome you and answer any and all your questions.  Next, a technician will measure your eyes using wavefront technology, called CustomVue.  The wavefront technology will confirm whether you are nearsighted, farsighted and/or have astigmatism.

After the technician, Dr. Lin will meet with you.  He will examine your eyes thoroughly to ensure your eyes are healthy.  There must be no ocular health problems present, such as cataracts or untreated glaucoma.

Additional diagnostic testing will be performed to measure the amount of nearsightedness or farsightedness, astigmatism, pupil size, and the thickness and detailed shape of the cornea.

What can I Expect from my LASIK Surgery?

Before surgery: To prepare for your surgery, plan on eating normally and taking your regular medications.  LASIK surgery is an ambulatory procedure which means you’ll walk into the surgery center, have the procedure, and then walk about again.  We request that you arranged for someone to drive you home after the procedure.  Please dress comfortably so that afterward you can go home and rest.

Will I need to take work off?

Most patients return to work within one to three days.

During Surgery:  The actual surgery usually takes less than 15 minutes for both eyes.  But expect to be the surgery center for an hour or more.  The procedure may be uncomfortable but not painful.  Your eyes are numbed with eye drops.  No needles are used.  You may feel pressure on your eye for about 30 seconds.  Body movements will not affect the procedure, nor will blink.

After Surgery: The best medication following the surgery is sleep.  The numbing drops used during surgery will start to wear off 2-3 hours after the procedure.  Sleep is the best way to avoid the discomfort after LASIK.

Use your eye drops.  After surgery, the nurse will give you eye drop to use.  Using the prescription eye drops and preservative-free artificial tears will help soothe your eyes.

Post-op Check-Up is usually scheduled one day after your surgery.  Dr. Lin will evaluate your vision and advise you on how to proceed.

Will LASIK interfere with my lifestyle?

Active sports should be postponed for two weeks or until the eye is fully healed, unless protective eyewear is approved by the surgeon.  Swimming, hot tubs and saunas should be avoided for three weeks. After a full recovery, normal activity can resume, and the ability to play sports without glasses makes them more enjoyable for many patients.

How long will the LASIK last?

LASIK is a permanent procedure.  In some cases, an enhancement procedure may be required.  Some patients’ eyes may change throughout their lifetime, which can happen with glasses or contact lenses as well.

I have dry eyes. Can LASIK help?

Many patients who desire LASIK surgery have dry eyes.  They have become intolerant of their contact lenses because the dryness makes them uncomfortable.  LASIK occasionally worsens dry eyes, but typically, this is temporary and usually treated with frequent artificial tear lubrication.  In special cases of severely dry eyes, special plugs can be placed in the lower eyelid to improve dryness.  The “permanent” plugs are easily removed in the office once the dryness resolves.  Dissolvable plugs are also available that disappear over a period of several months.  Your doctor will determine which are most appropriate for you.

Will insurance cover LASIK?

Generally, most insurance companies do not cover LASIK.  Some special employee programs, however, do cover a certain percentage.  Patients should inquire with their insurance representatives to determine benefits and coverage.  Some patients enjoy significant tax savings by allocating funds for LASIK in their pre-tax medical expense account.

Our commitment is to provide you with the best care.  Dr. Lin is selective when it comes to LASIK procedures.  The truth is, not everyone who wants LASIK is a good candidate and Dr. Lin will never guide you towards surgery if LASIK is not the best outcome.  Call us to ask questions.  Our talented staff is here to help you achieve better vision plus a healthier and happier life.
